North Texas has mild enough winters that we install landscape lighting year-round. But if you asked us when the ideal window is, we'd tell you late winter through early spring, and here's why.
The short version
- Best: February through May. Cool ground, dry weather, and time to enjoy it before summer.
- Also good: September through November. Comfortable weather, and the trees are still full.
- Slower for us, faster for you: December and January. Fewer projects, quicker scheduling.
Why late winter and early spring win
The ground isn't baked hard. Trenching is easier and cleaner. Beds haven't fully filled in yet, so we can see the bones of the yard and design lighting that will still work when everything grows out. And you get to enjoy the finished system for the whole spring and summer.
Why September through November is a close second
The heat has broken. Trees and shrubs are still full, which means the design accounts for real, mature foliage. This is also right before the holidays, so if you want landscape lighting done before Thanksgiving guests arrive, book by mid-September.
Summer is fine, with a note
July and August in North Texas are hot for our crews and hard on freshly disturbed lawns. We still install in summer, we just water and clean up carefully, and jobs can take slightly longer because we work early and late to beat the heat.
Winter has its own advantages
December and January are our slower months for landscape lighting (Christmas lighting is peak, but that's a separate crew for us). If you want quick scheduling and a night demo without waiting weeks, winter is actually a great time to book.
What about new construction?
The best time on a new build is right after landscaping is installed and grass is established. Trying to light a bare-dirt yard is guesswork. Wait until you can see the plan.
The bottom line
Any season works in North Texas. If you want to optimize, aim for February through May or September through November. If you want to skip the wait, book in winter. Either way, get on the calendar early: the best installers book out several weeks in every season.
